African Student Programs: It Takes a Village to Graduate a Scholar!

ASP: Then. Now. Forever!

We are honored to be one of the longest standing Black Resource Centers in California as we celebrate more than 50 years of uninterrupted service to the Black community here at UC Riverside!

Our saying, it takes a village to graduate a Black scholar, is not just lip service for our scholars, we mean it! Black scholars have a history on this campus and that's why we celebrate 50 years of African Student Programs! Our family and extended family/community ensure that our Black scholars are not just getting to UCR, but they're thriving academically, culturally, and beyond. We want our Black scholars to know that they're seen and they're meant to be here.

Our Black scholars come to our space as strangers and leave as friends and family. With our outstanding professional and student staff, connections with Black Faculty & Staff Association, mentorship programs, internships, and our Black Alumni Chapter, Black scholars are set up to succeed and lead. Contact our village any time. You are part of our village and we're happy to have you.

MISSION, VISION, & VALUES

African Student Programs' 50 year presence is not by happenstance. As the campus, community, and society evolved so has the mission, vision, and values of our department. ASP is a stimulating "home away from home", where scholars study, convene meetings, participate in workshops and lay the foundations for their future.

We provide dynamic, innovative programming and mentorship opportunities and encourage our scholars to write their own histories while honoring those before them. At ASP, you will find support, resources and a space where YOU feel valued and connected. Below are just a few of the services that we provide:

  • Educational and cultural programs
  • Academic support for scholars
  • Academic advising
  • Student organizations
  • Mentorship
  • Student advocacy and community engagement
  • Social justice and diversity education

The one thing that's constant? We're rooting for all of our Black scholars' success.

We Did It!

In 2022, Black Alumni Chapter and African Student Programs announced an audacious goal of securing $25,000 in endowment funds for our Black scholars, and of course, we surpassed that goal! Together, with the help of our community, more than $50,000 was raised for our Black scholars! This is the first time in Black Alumni Chapter history that an endowment was created to provide resources to Black scholars for the long term. These funds will be placed in an university endowment account that will live on permanently to support Black scholars with their needs!
